In recent years, we have witnessed an unprecedented transformation in the world of work, driven especially by the widespread adoption of remote work following the global pandemic that shook the world in 2020. So,  the lifestyle known as digital nomads is a rising trend

This change has had a domino effect in various sectors, including real estate, giving rise to the emergence of a new socio-economic phenomenon: the digital nomad. This new worker has found an ideal destination in the Costa del Sol and Marbella. This is evident from the latest report by the luxury real estate agency, Pure Living Properties, titled “Digital Nomads in Marbella and the Costa del Sol: A Perspective on the High-End Real Estate Sector.”

From a real estate perspective, Pure Living Properties has seen a 40% increase in demand for properties for digital nomads in Marbella, particularly in long-term rentals of high-end villas and apartments. This phenomenon is concentrated in the so-called Golden Triangle (Marbella, Estepona, and Benahavís), known for its climate, strategic location, and high quality of life.

Another noteworthy statistic from the report is the 2,400% increase in searches for “digital nomad” in Spain over the past five years, indicating a clear surge in interest in this lifestyle.

Growing Interest in Homes with Outdoor Spaces for Remote Work

The digital nomads visa and the Startup Law 028/2022, turning points

This heightened attractiveness has been further catalyzed by the recent implementation of the digital nomad visa and the innovative Startup Law 028/2022. These government initiatives represent a significant effort to attract professionals and entrepreneurs from around the world, offering an environment conducive to both remote work and business innovation.

The digital nomad visa, a novelty in Spanish legislation, provides a legal pathway for remote workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to reside and work in Spain for extended periods. With benefits such as a streamlined application process and requirements tailored to the needs of remote workers, this visa is positioning Spain as one of the most desirable destinations for digital nomads worldwide.

On the other hand, the Startup Law offers fiscal incentives and benefits for new companies and entrepreneurs, creating a more favorable environment for innovation and entrepreneurship. This is particularly relevant for the Costa del Sol, where a growing number of digital nomads are not only seeking a place to live and work but also opportunities to start or expand their own business ventures.

Profile of the Digital Nomads in the Costa del Sol

The profile of the digital nomad who chooses the Costa del Sol is typically young, belonging to Generation Z and Millennials, according to a recent study by the Junta de Andalucía. Contrary to the common perception that most digital nomads are single, the study reveals that a surprising 70% of them relocate with a partner. This data suggests a growing need to adapt not only tourism products but also real estate offerings to meet the demands of couples and families.

Furthermore, a study by the Flatio platform indicates that more than 50% of digital nomads are under the age of 40. When it comes to their preferences, proximity to the coast (46.6%) and the presence of sunshine are determining factors in choosing their destination. Spain, and specifically the Costa del Sol, ranks as the third most popular country for these professionals, behind Portugal and Thailand, but it is the most desired destination, surpassing places like Brazil and Madeira.

Regarding the type of housing, there is a “growing demand for properties that not only offer luxury and comfort but also functionality and connectivity,” says Javier Nieto, CEO of Pure Living Properties. “Our digital nomad clients are primarily looking for spaces that combine ergonomic and peaceful work areas with high-level leisure. This includes well-equipped home offices, high-speed internet connections, and outdoor spaces that allow for a healthy balance between work and personal life,” concludes Nieto.

The Costa del Sol and Marbella: Why Digital Nomads are a Rising Destination

In addition to its sunny climate and beautiful beaches, the combination of high-quality infrastructure, an attractive international community, and an environment that promotes a balance between work and leisure is turning the Costa del Sol into a hub for this new style of work and personal life.

First-class restaurants, trendy beach clubs, and opportunities for leisure and culture make Marbella a place where remote work becomes a lifestyle. Furthermore, the presence of numerous coworking spaces and business centers equipped with the latest technology ensures that digital nomads have everything they need to work efficiently while enjoying a stimulating environment.
